Happenings - Briggs Animal Adoption Center

The National Humane Education Society (NHES), holds several events each year to raise money for its programs Spay Today and The Briggs Animal Adoption Center (BAAC).

Bark at the Moon Glow Walk

Join us for BAAC’s next Bark at the Moon Glow Walk! Bring the whole family and enjoy a moonlit stroll along our walking path.

There will be refreshments, a photo booth, a 50/50 raffle, glow-in-the-dark accessories available for purchase, and adoptable dogs for the family to meet!

Dress your dog up in his or her best glow-in-the-dark gear so they can compete to be the BEST DRESSED GLOW DOG! The top 3 winners will receive a special prize!

The course runs around the grounds of the Briggs Animal Adoption Center and is just over one mile long.

The fall date in 2023 will be announced shortly.

Tails on Trails

Each spring, NHES begins the season with Tails on Trails 5K & 10K Walk/Run. Held at the beautiful State Arboretum of Virginia at Blandy Experimental Farm in Boyce, Virginia, this event benefits Spay Today. Participants can run or walk by themselves, or bring along their canine companion. Runners have the option of being timed for either the 5K or 10K course.

People have the opportunity to “Sponsor a Shelter Dog,” allowing dogs currently available for adoption at The Briggs Animal Adoption Center to attend the event. These dogs are walked by trained volunteers and are present during the walk for participants to meet. Those whom sponsor a shelter dog have their names added to the back of the event t-shirt, which each sponsor and participant receives upon completion of the walk/run. This event is a great opportunity for people to enjoy a fun-filled day while supporting Spay Today.

In 2023, Tails on Trails will be held on Saturday, April 15th.

Pedal for Pooches

Pedal for Pooches is one of The National Humane Education Society’s flagship events to benefit the animals at The Briggs Animal Adoption Center. In the past, cyclists from all over visited the Center to ride in support of our animals and tour our facilities. The NHES President, Jim Taylor, established the President’s Ride where supporters can pledge his participation in the event.

Cyclists used to start and end at BAAC in Charles Town, West Virginia, and they would ride through Jefferson and Clarke counties on courses either 9, 16, 21, 30, or 36 miles long. When the pandemic hit, this event changed to a virtual one. Participants were encouraged to ride their favorite route, and the BAAC/NHES staff rode on the beautiful Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Tow Path.

In 2023, Pedal for Pooches will be held on Saturday, May 6th, along the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Tow Path.

Cool to Care Camp

NHES hosts a Cool to Care Camp for children in grades 1 through 9 at The Briggs Animal Adoption Center every summer. The youngest camp session is usually held in late June, Monday-Friday from 12:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., and the other two sessions are held in July, Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The NHES humane educators make learning fun with outdoor games, arts and crafts, service projects, and interaction with rescued companion animals at BAAC! Campers also enjoy guest speaker presentations from amazing animal professionals – including K9 teams, wildlife rehabilitators, and specially trained therapy dogs.

In 2023, Pet Pals will be held June 26th- June 30th, from 12-3:30 p.m. Humane Heroes will be held July 10th- 14th, from 9-3 p.m. Animal Advocates will be held July 24th- July 28th, from 9-3 p.m. Registration opens April 1st at 8 a.m.

Footin’ for Animals

Footin’ for Animals 5K & 10K Walk/Run serves as the fall counterpart to Tails on Trails. Also held at the State Arboretum of Virginia at Blandy Experimental Farm in Boyce, Virginia, this event benefits The Briggs Animal Adoption Center. Participants can run or walk by themselves, or bring along their canine companion. Runners have the option of being timed for either the 5K or 10K course.

Just as with Tails on Trails, people have the opportunity to “Sponsor a Shelter Dog,” allowing dogs currently available for adoption at The Briggs Animal Adoption Center to attend the event. These dogs are walked by trained volunteers and are present during the walk for participants to meet. Those whom sponsor a shelter dog have their names added to the back of the event t-shirt, which each sponsor and participant receives upon completion of the walk/run. Enjoy the beautiful fall foliage at the arboretum while supporting the work of The BAAC.

In 2023, Footin’ for Animals will be held on Saturday, October 7th.

101-Mile Anna C. Briggs Memorial Hike for Homeless Animals

The First Annual Anna C. Briggs Memorial Hike for Homeless Animals was held the beginning of November 2020. Ten staff and volunteers each hiked 10.1 miles of the Appalachian Trail for a combined total of 101 miles—equal to Anna C. Briggs’ 101 years on this earth helping to create a more humane world for animals. Watch a short video of why staff and volunteers hiked in memory of Anna C. Briggs.

We’d like to invite you join us in “taking thousands of steps” to save more animals—and you can do it at your own pace in a location of your choosing!

In 2023, the hike will be held on Sunday, November 5th. Details and sponsorship opportunities to be announced.

7th Annual Dubs and Dogs Car Show

The 7th Annual Dubs and Dogs Volkswagen Car Show presented by Dëutschwurx is back! Dubs and Dogs is a fun event to help raise funds for our furry friends here at the Briggs Animal Adoption Center!

You will find an array of 1950’s-current VW’s, Audis, and Porsches. Mark your 2023 calendars for Saturday, July 8th, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. (Rain date is July 9th) The event is free to the public, but we would greatly appreciate any donations of cat or dog food for our emergency pet food pantry to help families in need.
