Of course we can't even count the number of times those little laid-back puppies have turned into wild and rowdy whirlwinds after getting into their own homes with their own families. We think they know exactly what they're doing when they use those big brown puppy dog eyes to win us over! |

She just recently received orthopedic surgery on both hips to repair injuries from her previous life on the run. When Ginger arrived at the BAAC, she was brought in with her daughter, Gwen. Gwen was in pretty good health considering the absence of care both dogs had received before being rescued. Ginger, on the other hand, had multiple scars on her body, especially on the head and face. She also had a lot of pain in her hip area, making it difficult for her to walk or play as she seemed to want to do. When our veterinarian examined Ginger and x-rayed her hips, she was surprised to see how badly Ginger's hips were out of socket, so much so that it was decided we would take Ginger for a consultation with a veterinary orthopedic surgeon. After further examination and additional x-rays, the orthopedic veterinarian concluded that the femoral head on each side of her hip was so badly worn down and out of position that he felt Ginger had probably sustained severe trauma to her hips some time ago. Without receiving proper medical attention, Gingers hips fused as best they could, resulting in her painful condition. Since Ginger and her daughter had literally been on the run before we took them in, there is no one to ask if she had been abused or received her injury from some moving vehicle. All we know is that she would cower if you raise your hand over your head when around her. But as we see time and time again, dogs are so forgiving to humans. Ginger has been so loving and sweet with everyone she has encountered here. The really great news for Ginger though is that she came to Briggs, because we took on the costs necessary to have her hips operated on by the orthopedic veterinarian. Her prognosis is excellent with the surgery and with some post-operative physical therapy, Gingers hips should heal almost good as new. After receiving the surgery in mid-July, the doctor has told us that she will require approximately 6 weeks of recovery and physical therapy three times a day. Our staff is doing an excellent job working with her leg extension exercises and we can help show any interested adopters how to continue these exercises. It will be a few more weeks until Ginger can be seen for adoption (early to mid-August) and we are looking for the right match of a gentle, loving home to assist her in her recovery time and then provide a permanent, loving home for the rest of her life. Ginger certainly deserves it. UPDATE July 27, 2003: It has been just over two weeks since Gingers surgery and she is doing wonderfully with her physical therapy exercises. She is almost able to stand without assistance and attempts every day to walk on her own. UPDATE September 15, 2003: Nearly 8 weeks following her surgery, Ginger has recovered to the point that she wants to be the one to walk her human friends, instead of the other way around! She jumps up on the futon in our adoption room every chance she gets and enjoys singing and conversing with the staff. It is a wonderful thing to see. Now she just needs that permanent, loving home. |
